CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- A bill to ban children from indoor tanning is one step closer to becoming law.
The Senate voted 30-4 to pass the bill, which supporters hope will protect children from skin cancer.
The proposed bill would require tanning salons to register with their local health departments and would require patrons to present proof of their age before they could tan. People younger than 18 would be prohibited from using the tanning beds.
Sen. Bob Williams voted against the bill because he says such a law would shutter tanning salons due to the loss of their younger customers. Williams questioned whether the health statistics that proponents cite are true.
The American Cancer Society believes such bans would help reduce the number of melanoma cases among young adults.
